It was recently revealed that a new loot of $370 million has been traced to the former Military Head of State, late Sani Abacha in Luxembourg.
Recall that the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Hans Rudolf Hodel, in a meeting recently with the President elect, Muhammadu Buhari, disclosed that about $370million recovered from former head of state, Gen. Sani Abacha, has been traced by the Swiss government to a Luxembourg account.
Nigerians have however reacted to this new development. Some of them took to Twitter to make their points known. While some think the former military head of state’s idea of stashing money in account abroad is a very nice idea because of the interests it is yielding for the country, some are against the idea, lambasting the late dictator and the people that were a part of his government way back. Abacha Kidnapped Money!!! "@Psuellayman: Abacha SAVED. "@olatostar: Abacha didn't steal.... Abacha packed.""
After the death of Sani Abacha in June 1998, his wife, Maryam, attempted to leave Nigeria with suitcases filled with money. She was arrested for the offense, placed on 24-hour surveillance, and banned from leaving Nigeria.
In 1999 Maryam Abacha said that her husband acted in the good will of Nigeria; an official of the Nigerian government claim that Maryam Abacha said that to convince the government to grant her a reprieve, as the president, Olusegun Obasanjo, had been jailed by Sani Abacha.
